Oral Roberts University men’s soccer head coach Ryan Bush announced on May 14 updates to his coaching staff for the upcoming 2026 season. Sergio Romero and Edgardo Mira have been promoted to assistant coaches, while former goalkeeper Joao Mesquita will join as a graduate assistant.
The changes reflect ongoing efforts to strengthen the program. Promoting from within and bringing back former players are intended to reinforce continuity and maintain high standards in the team’s culture.
Romero, who joined Oral Roberts as a graduate assistant in 2025, has six seasons of playing experience, including three undefeated years at Richland College where he was a three-time national champion. He later transferred to the University of Tulsa and contributed to a Sweet 16 appearance and No. 2 national ranking, earning All-Conference honors. “I am excited about Sergio’s promotion within the ORU Men’s Soccer program,” said Bush. “Throughout his tenure, he has elevated the culture of our program and consistently demonstrated that he is ready to help take ORU Men’s Soccer to another level. Sergio brings tremendous positive energy, professionalism, and leadership to our environment, and his experience winning multiple national championships while in America gives him a championship mindset that will greatly impact our players and staff. We believe Sergio will play a major role in helping us pursue the standards and vision we have established for the future of this program.” Romero holds a bachelor’s degree from Tulsa (2024) and is pursuing his master’s at Oral Roberts.
Mira played under Bush from 2012-2015 at Oral Roberts before going on to play professionally in Guatemala and El Salvador between 2016-2024; he also appeared for El Salvador’s national football team from 2017-2021. Mira previously served as volunteer coach with Golden Eagles women’s soccer before becoming graduate assistant sport performance coach for men’s soccer ahead of last season. “Edgardo is an obvious promotion within our culture and program,” said Bush. “As one of the most decorated players in ORU history, along with extensive First Division professional experience around the world, he brings tremendous knowledge, professionalism, and credibility to our staff as Director of Player Development… He understands the culture, has won championships here, and will help reinforce the high standards…”
Mesquita returns after two seasons as Golden Eagles goalkeeper (24 games played), having previously competed at Western Texas College; he was named Summit League Defensive Peak Performer of Week in 2025 after nine saves against Massachusetts Amherst. In addition to being recognized on league academic teams last year: “Joao Mesquita had a tremendous career at ORU… now returns …in an operational and video analysis role…,” said Bush.
Assistant coach John Woodhead remains with staff following his own promotion last year; Xander Quiroga continues as volunteer.
