Following a nationwide search, the City of Broken Arrow has selected Kevin Maevers to lead the Community Development Department. Maevers has more than 40 years of experience in the field and comes to Broken Arrow following a position as the Community Development Director in Roswell, New Mexico.
"I actually got my first job in planning at 16 years old for a small consulting firm," Maevers said. "My dad and my brother formed a small consulting firm when I was in my 20s."
Maevers has experience in multi-discipline environments such as land development, consulting, municipalities, and the private sector. He has a bachelor's degree in social sciences and a master's degree in organizational leadership, both from Chapman University, and is working toward a doctorate in management and organizational leadership.
"We are very excited to have Kevin join the City's leadership team. His combination of extensive experience in both the private and public sector will be a genuine asset to Broken Arrow as we manage our existing Community Development needs and plan for the city's amazing future," City Manager Michael Spurgeon said.
The Community Development Department has four divisions, each of which has varying degrees of responsibility:
- Planning and Development
- Placemaking
- Neighborhood Engagement and Inspections
- Community Permitting and Licensing
Maevers and his wife, Tamara Kozma, have been married for 21 years. He said that when looking for his next position, both he and his wife wanted to become part of a community where they would feel welcomed and have the opportunity to serve.
"We were looking for a place we could call home for the rest of our lives, and we absolutely believe we found that here in Broken Arrow," he said.
Maevers began working for the city on May 31.
