Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa is set to host an exhibition titled "Samurai: Armor from the Collection of Ann & Gabriel Barbier-Mueller" from March 12 to August 3, 2025. The exhibition will showcase one of the most significant collections of samurai armor outside Japan.

The exhibit features nearly one hundred objects, including full suits, helmets, weaponry, and horse armor. Many pieces date back to the Edo period (1615-1868), a time that saw the rise and eventual decline of the samurai class due to evolving political and military structures. Some works originate as early as the Kamakura period (1185-1333), reflecting on the evolution of "omote dogu," or the external appearance and equipment of samurai warriors.

In addition to viewing these historical artifacts, visitors can engage in various programs designed in collaboration with community partners. Activities include paper lantern workshops, martial arts demonstrations, tea services, and flower arranging.

Niña Barbier-Mueller Tollett, President of The Barbier-Mueller Collection, expressed enthusiasm about bringing this collection to Tulsa. "We are excited to bring The Samurai Collection to the Philbrook Art Museum and share these exceptional pieces with the Tulsa community," she said. She emphasized that each piece "tells a powerful story of craftsmanship and culture that has endured for centuries."

Philbrook Museum's commitment extends beyond hosting exhibitions; it aims to be a welcoming cultural institution offering diverse experiences through its historic home setting, world-class art museum, and expansive gardens. Since opening in 1939 and undergoing expansions over time, Philbrook continues to serve over 160,000 visitors annually while promoting American, Native American, and European art.

The Ann & Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Museum: The Samurai Collection has been curated over thirty-five years by Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller along with their children. It includes masterpieces dating from the 7th to 19th centuries such as suits of armor and weaponry. The collection is displayed at its Dallas location in Harwood District but also tours globally.
