A pavement reconstruction project that will require closing 37th Street (209th E. Ave.) from Houston St. (81st St.) to Kenosha St. (71st St.) is set to begin Thursday, May 4, and should continue through August.
According to Construction Division Manager Timothy Robins, this closure is necessary to allow the contractor to build the roadway faster, safer, and with fewer traffic transitions. Currently, Cherokee Pride Construction is on-site installing the waterline and upgrading and relocating the utilities.
City utility crews are also on-site installing new sanitary sewer crossings at Timber Ridge Cottages and Casey's Convenience Store. The crossings are expected to be finished in late May.
"The contractor will begin installing the stormwater drainage system on the project this week after the roadway is closed," Robins said. "Once complete, they will begin the removal of the existing street on the project's south end and start working north."
During this closure, residents will have local access through the existing roadway and temporary routes will be added during construction. The entire project is expected to be completed in the spring of 2024. Cherokee Pride Construction, Inc. was the lowest responsible bidder for the project at $3,131,395.75.
